Choosing the Right Ampoule Format

Form B, C and D, one point cut, colour break rings and identification rings — what each one is for, and how the opening method shapes the rest of the decision.

Automated inspection of formed glass containers

An ampoule is the simplest primary container in injectable packaging and, for that reason, the one where format decisions are most often made by habit. The shape of the shoulder and the way the neck is opened both have consequences well past the packaging specification.

The forms

Forms B, C and D describe the geometry of the body and shoulder. The practical differences show up in three places: how the container behaves in a filling machine’s handling parts, how easily residual volume can be withdrawn, and how the ampoule sits in secondary packaging.

How it opens

  • One point cut (OPC) — a score at a single point with a colour marker, opened by hand without a file
  • Colour break ring — a fired ceramic ring at the break point, used where a stronger visual cue is wanted
  • Scoring — a mechanical score line, most often specified where an opening aid is used

The opening method is a usability decision as much as a technical one. Where the ampoule will be opened by a clinician under time pressure, the cue that tells them where to break it is doing real work.

Identification

Up to three identification rings are commonly available, and they are the cheapest error-prevention feature in the whole container. Where a product family shares a strength range, a distinct ring pattern per strength is worth more than a larger label.

Clear or amber

Amber glass is specified for photosensitive formulations. It is not free: it reduces the contrast available for visible particulate inspection, so the decision is made against stability data rather than as a default.
